HiSET Testing Requirements in New Hampshire

A New Hampshire High School Equivalency Certificate is granted by the NH Department of Education to New Hampshire residents who successfully pass the HiSET™ Tests.

Requirements for Issuance of the New Hampshire High School Equivalency Certificate (as of January 1, 2014)

  • Minimum Test Scores: A minimum standard score of 8 on each of the five HiSET™ tests AND a total standard score of 45, which is an average of 9 on each of the five tests.
  • Residence: In order to receive a New Hampshire certificate, an applicant must have physically resided or had a legal residence within the state at the time of testing.
  • Minimum Age: Applicants must be 18 years old. Students 16 and 17 years old may apply under certain conditions (see additional Information for Students Under the Age of 18).

Requirements for Retesting

There is no specific waiting period, but applicants who do not pass all parts of the HiSET™ Tests are encouraged to seek additional preparation before retesting.

Method of Applying

Register online through the HiSET portal ( Then contact the New Hampshire testing center of your choice to schedule and pay for testing. Some centers require test-takers of all ages to provide proof that you have passed pre-tests. Contact the local testing center for information about test dates and registration requirements. You must provide a government-issued photo identification when you schedule testing and each time you take HiSET tests.
