Special Accommodations for High School Equivalency Testing


What is the process for accommodation requests?
Test takers apply for accommodations using the Request for Testing Accommodations form on the HiSET online registration site. In addition, those requesting accommodations can reach ETS Disability Services, the customer service area that specializes in working with individuals with disabilities, by telephone or email for questions about the requirements, the process or the status of a decision.

Upon receiving the Request for Testing Accommodations form and relevant documentation, ETS will promptly contact the test taker. ETS processes the majority of routine requests within 10 business days. ETS may need to request additional documentation to conduct further analysis of the case or to identify any unprecedented requests. After ETS processes a request, the test taker is contacted via email regarding the approval or denial of the requested accommodations. We also notify test center personnel of approved accommodations.

What type of accommodations will be available?
Accommodations available for paper-based and computer-based administrations include:

  • test center location with wheelchair access
  • separate room
  • extended time
  • special location/private room/small group
  • calculator/talking calculator
  • additional supervised break time
  • signed interpreted instructions for deaf or hard of hearing test takers

Accommodations available for paper-based administrations include:

  • audiocassette
  • large print with extended time
  • scribe

Accommodations available for computer-based administrations include:

  • Click to Enlarge — This feature expands information such as figures, tables, charts and illustrations that might otherwise be difficult for certain test takers to see.
  • Magnification — Test takers have the ability to increase the size of the test content. This mode of magnification follows industry standards of operation. Visually impaired test takers who use similar applications will be familiar with how to operate the tool.
  • Zoom — Test takers can increase the size of the testing window from two to five times the original size. Depending on the screen resolution and the factor of zoom increase that candidates select, the test content may expand beyond the full size of the computer monitor. When this is the case, arrows will appear in order to indicate that test takers can move the mouse to the edges of the screen to view hidden test content.
  • 4x Zoom — Zoom factors of 2x to 5x are available. The zoom setting may expand the test content beyond the full size of the computer monitor. When this is the case, arrows will appear in order to indicate that test takers can move the mouse to the edges of the screen to view hidden test content.
  • Color Contrast — Using this function, test takers can change the background and foreground color of the testing area to 12 predetermined color combinations. These combinations enhance readability and reduce eye fatigue, depending on an individual test-taker's needs and preferences.

High School Equivalency Adaptations That Do Not Require Prior Approval
Please note: High School Equivalency Examiners are trained to question any materials brought to a testing session. Even though the adaptations below do not require a formal approval process, an examinee who wishes to use them must inform the examiner when he or she schedules a test. This is important so there will be no confusion at the testing session. ALL items brought into the testing room are subject to inspection by the examiner. The items below may be permitted by the local examiner without prior approval by personnel from the state or the testing organization.

  • Colored transparent overlays: These are tinted plastic overlays sometimes used by individuals with visual impairments and learning disabilities. Test-takers will need to provide their own such device.
  • Earplugs: Test-takers may use earplugs to reduce ambient noise, as an aid in concentration. The earplugs may not be attached to any electronic device. Candidates will need to provide their own such device.
  • Scrap paper: Test-takers may use plain white scrap paper, issued by the examiner. The scrap paper (used and unused) must be collected at the end of the testing session and destroyed.
  • Straightedge: Test-takers may use a plain, unmarked straightedge made from any safe material, as an aid in spatial orientation and reading. Candidates will need to provide their own such device, unless the straightedge is a piece of plain white scrap paper. If the straightedge is a piece of scratch paper issued by the examiner, it must be collected at the end of the testing session and destroyed.
  • Magnifying Device: Test-takers may use a handheld magnifying device during the test. Candidates will need to provide their own such device.
  • Cushion: Test-takers may use a small seat cushion for support during the test. Candidates will need to provide their own such cushion.
  • Large-Print Test Edition (Paper test) or Screen-Magnification Software (Computer-based test): Test-takers may use the large-print edition of the Test, using normal time limits. Prior arrangements must be made for large-print editions.
  • Priority Seating: Test-takers may request permission to be seated near the front of the room in order to better hear instructions, or in another part of the room in order to reduce distractions.
  • One Test per Day: Test-takers may take one subtest per day upon prior arrangement with the local Chief Examiner.
