The NH Department of Education’s First Annual Backpack Drive Was a Success

The NH Department of Education (DOE) held a backpack drive between July 25 and August 19, 2016. Thanks to the generosity of the public, and other state agencies including the Attorney General’s Office, the Department of Cultural Resources, the Department of Health and Human Services, the Department of Safety, the NH Supreme Court, and the SEA, over 160 backpacks were collected. The backpacks have now been provided to school nurses who will work to distribute them to children in need in their respective schools.

The idea for the backpack drive came from Diana Fenton, an attorney at the DOE, who said she’d held a backpack drive on a smaller scale while working at the Department of Justice. The idea made even more sense given the DOE’s mission, and with the support of Commissioner Virginia Barry, Ms. Fenton put out the call for donations.

“Children need so much to start the year fresh, and it can be hard for parents to afford a backpack,” Fenton said. “We want to do what we can to try to make sure children who need a backpack can get one, and have the ability to start the year fresh.”
