Department of Education to Support School Nurses

A new initiative at the Department of Education will support school nurses with technical assistance, resources and training. The efforts will be coordinated by Nancy Wells, RN, School Nursing Coordinator. Wells, a nationally certified school nurse and former clinical assistant professor at UNH, will focus on the areas of student wellness, mental health, alcohol and substance abuse, parental education, school health policy and staff development.

“Being a school nurse is a challenging job,” commented Wells. “I am excited to support this essential service for our school communities.”

According to the National Association of School Nurses, the school nurse serves a pivotal role to provide expertise and oversight for the provision of school health services and promotion of health education. Using clinical knowledge and judgment, the school nurse provides health care to students and staff, performs health screenings and coordinates referrals to the medical home or private healthcare provider. The school nurse serves as a liaison between school personnel, family, community and healthcare providers to advocate for health care and a healthy school environment.

The School Nursing initiative will be part of the Office of Student Wellness in the Bureau of Special Education. The Office of Student Wellness works in collaboration with local communities, school districts, and individuals, to support students as they become fully productive members of society. Efforts are focused on several key areas including: early childhood social and emotional learning and development, prevention, safety, and support for mental, emotional, and behavioral Health.
