Achieve Releases Proficiency Comparison Study
Study eyes "honesty gaps" around the United States by comparing assessment scores with NAEP proficiency rates
CONCORD – Achieve, a nonprofit education organization focused on college and career readiness, released a study recently comparing the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) sampling ratings with assessment scores tabulated by states. The report, released in May, compares 2016-2017 state results along with NAEP results from 2017 and found that grade 4 and grade 8 students narrowed proficiency gaps in most states in reading and mathematics. Although the data is nearly two years old, the new report – when compared to the previous report issued in 2015, studying 2013 data – shows that more rigorous cut scores yielded reductions in the gaps.
Education officials in states around the country, including the New Hampshire Department of Education, will be using the data to compare it to other results to measure how proficient students are in reading and mathematics and what educators need to do in order to help students become more prepared in the subject matters.
As noted by the NH DOE in early April, the NAEP report showed that New Hampshire students continue perform above the national average with Grade 4 students ranked fourth in reading and the second highest in mathematics among all states while Grade 8 students were the second highest achieving in both reading and mathematics among all states.
