Migrant Children In NH Post High Reading Scores: Report

CONCORD – The children of migrant workers who received assistance in reading education while in New Hampshire scored some of the highest results of states participating in a performance review, according to data released by MiraCORE. The students received personalized learning as part of the program, participating in one-on-one tutorials in their homes. The students were tested, given the tutorial, and then tested again based on the learning they received.

The testing tabulations were measured across three years. According to the results, of the 12 states participating in the migrant education program grant, students in New Hampshire received the highest mean post-test scores and highest percent of tutorials in 2015 and the second highest in 2016 and 2017.

The goal of MiraCORE is to improve coordination between migrant education programs by sharing and developing technology-based reading instructional materials focused on literacy skills for migratory students and youth.

The New Hampshire Migrant Education Program (NH MEP), Title I, Part C, which is part of the New Hampshire Department of Education, assists students from more than 14 different countries around the world whose families are in the Granite State working in the agriculture sector. Many of the students are out of school or students at risk of failing or dropping out due to frequent moves, cultural differences, language barriers, and other issues. The NH MEP provides supplemental education and support services to approximately 150 students each year in an effort to help them gain the skills they need – such as HiSet prep, English as a second language, and financial skills – to succeed.
