Smiths Medical

Smiths Medical, a VR New Hampshire Employment Leadership Award winner that employs people with disabilities.

Global manufacturer Smiths Medical is passionate about improving and saving the lives of patients through its medical devices and services. The company is also passionate about inclusion and building a workforce that reflects their community.

In 2019, Smiths Medical began working with VR New Hampshire partner Monadnock Worksource to create job opportunities for individuals with disabilities in its Keene, NH facility. The effort led to a successful hiring program that gives people with disabilities the opportunity to learn a job and grow within the Smith Medical family.

Jeffrey Wolf, Manufacturing Operations Manager at Smiths Medical, speaks highly of the company’s relationship with VR partners, which results in workforce solutions, job coaching, and accommodations support to ensure success on the job. “These individuals are valued members of our team,” he says. “They really contribute in a positive manner to both the atmosphere we have here, as well as our overall productivity levels.”

One of the employees supported by Monadnock Worksource has worked at Smiths since January of 2019. During that time, she has grown personally and professionally in Smiths Medical’s supportive and friendly work environment, learning new skills and gaining a sense of responsibility. This employee has asked about opportunities for advancement and is working with leadership to explore other job opportunities available to her at Smiths.

Another employee hired at Smiths through VR says he appreciates the people, opportunities, and workplace at Smiths. “I just feel good in the environment,” he notes. “It’s got good hours, good benefits.”

Mr. Wolf highly encourages other businesses to “take the leap” and tap the talent pool of people with disabilities. “Those challenges and any fears we had going in were just not realized,” he said. “We’ve seen overall benefits from employing these individuals that we never would have expected, and we actually strengthened the overall organization.”
